James Charles Makeup Tutorial Video
1. Encounter - makeup tutorials are becoming very popular now, commercials over James as cover girl, popped up on my feed on Instagram all the time YOUTUBE (could talk about his scandals too)
2. Conventions of genre
-
Typical = YOUTUBE is a big thing now, easy access, subscribe buttons, simple white background makes everything clear and easy to see, everything that he does is clearly explained, lighting
-
Atypical = he is a guy doing makeup, BEFORE makeup artists performed on other people not themselves, NOW it is changing
3. Genre content
-
Typical = typical YOUTUBE video
-
Atypical = the amount of makeup used, more excessive it is (not normal, everyday makeup)
4. The rhetorical situation + purpose
-
YOUTUBE is such a great outlet for people to get information and ideas out
-
Accessible and everyone passes through it everyday
-
He is very into his fan club and speaks to them as if they are right there with him, in turn makes him more likable and fans keep coming back
-
Easy to talk to in a sense
-
the motivation is that he wants to teach other people how to do makeup
-
to show everyone how well he does makeup
-
To promote his product line of makeup
5. Audience
-
The audience to geared towards people who wear a lot of makeup, people that would like to learn how to do makeup, and people that like his personality
-
Consequential audience are people just scrolling on Instagram, people who just tap on the next recommended video on YOUTUBE, people who are into social media and hear about his scandals and in turn want to find out who he is/what he does
6. Evolution (this could go both ways)
-
Evolution of makeup artists - used to be someone doing it on another person but NOW they show you how to do it by doing it on themselves + to keep up with trends, so many new and different makeup lines are coming out
-
Evolution of YOUTUBE - so many media outlets that are easy and accessible, you can find everything on this one site
7. Issues with the text/genre (ALL PERSONAL)
-
I believe it is too much makeup, normal everyday people do not have the time or people to do this types of things PLUS why is there a need for such an excessive amount of makeup just to go to the store
-
There is this high unhealthy standard of beauty and it messes with people’s heads: believing that you need to buy the products he does to look as good as him
-
There is always more and more needed to become different, more makeup and more outrageous styles and ideas (weird eyebrow thing, painting on your eyelid)
-
THIS IS ALL MY OPINION: OF COURSE EVERYONE IS ABLE TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES AS THEY SEE FIT
